Background of the Study:
In Bauchi State, transportation challenges are a significant determinant of healthcare utilization. Many residents in rural and peri-urban areas must traverse long distances on poorly maintained roads to reach the nearest healthcare facility, which increases travel time and costs (Oluwaseun, 2023). These challenges are exacerbated by seasonal weather conditions, such as heavy rains that render roads impassable. As a consequence, individuals delay or completely forgo seeking medical care, leading to poorer health outcomes and increased disease burden. Transportation constraints often force patients to rely on informal means of transport that may be unsafe or inefficient, further deterring healthcare access. Economic factors play a crucial role; low-income families cannot always afford the costs associated with travel, resulting in inequitable access to care (Aminu, 2024). Additionally, the lack of public transportation systems and limited community-based health outreach programs compound these issues. In urban centers, traffic congestion also contributes to delays in accessing emergency services. The cumulative effect of these transportation barriers is a significant decrease in healthcare utilization, particularly among the most vulnerable populations. Improving transportation infrastructure and access is critical for enhancing healthcare delivery and ensuring that medical services are accessible when needed (Ibrahim, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Transportation challenges in Bauchi State severely affect healthcare utilization. Poor road conditions, lack of reliable public transport, and high travel costs impede residents’ ability to reach healthcare facilities. These issues are most acute in rural areas, where long distances and deteriorating infrastructure contribute to significant delays in obtaining care. The inability to access timely medical services often results in worsened health outcomes, particularly in emergencies. Additionally, transportation barriers contribute to inequities in healthcare access, as low-income households are disproportionately affected by these challenges. The result is a population that is more vulnerable to preventable diseases and complications, placing an increased burden on the healthcare system. Despite attempts by the government to improve transportation, these measures have not fully resolved the accessibility issues that hinder healthcare utilization (Umar, 2023). There is an urgent need to understand the extent and nature of transportation challenges and their impact on healthcare usage in Bauchi State in order to develop targeted interventions.
